Embracing Transformative Learning

Embracing Transformative Learning:
Exploring our perspectives, transforming our impact
Friday 16 & Saturday 17 October 2026

Introduction:
Reflection on experience brings forth what is known and not yet known. It allow us to recognise and enter places of disquiet and longing, with openness to see the new and surprising

Undertaking supervision is an intentional pause for reflection on current understandings and patterns that are limiting. Through reflection, greater clarity and the invitation to embrace new vision, possibility and wisdom emerges: the impetus for change is supported, and new competency for action is nurtured.

Workshop overview:
This workshop will deepen participants’ awareness of the supervisory role; the impact of contexts on supervision; and how spirituality/values/beliefs inform supervisory practice.

It will be an experiential immersion in a process of Transformative Learning, utilising reflective exercises and a selection of readings to bring to life Transformative Learning’s theoretical foundations, first espoused by Jack Mezirow.

By raising participants’ awareness of their internal and external responses in encounters with, and supervision of others, participants will become more conscious of the relational dynamics present, identifying their own and the other’s learning edges.

Small group or triad practice sessions using participants’ live cases, will identify the focus of supervision and develop competency in delivering effective responses, that support further reflection and growth

What we will cover:
• Applying key stages of the Transformative Learning Process through reflection on
  experience to the task of supervision:
             1. Recognizing and exploring our own and supervisees’ experiences of
                Disorientation and Affective Responses;
             2. Facilitating critical reflection on assumptions;
             3. Encouraging experimentation, evaluation, active planning and resourcing;
             4. Celebrating Re-integration into life and work.
• Developing supervisory alliances of trust through empathic listening, acceptance and
  sensitive pacing.
• Recognizing unconscious dynamics through somatic responses and experiences of
  resistance or attraction.
• Recognizing unnamed agendas, and boundary issues.
What you can expect to walk away with:
• Understanding how a Transformative Learning framework can be utilised for effective
   supervision enhancing a person’ ongoing development
• Confidence in identifying and responding to supervisees’ presentation and learning
  agendas
• Introduction to common dynamics in supervision and how to work with these.
• Deepened personal awareness of your own growth edges as a supervisor
